Case Study - Wear Estuary Edges
Project Summary
The Wear Estuary has a long history of shipbuilding and has been
extensively modified, resulting in the loss of important upper‑shore
habitats. A feasibility study by Groundwork North East identified
opportunities for saltmarsh restoration.
We installed brushwood fascine berms at Barons Quay and Claxheugh
Rocks to reduce wave energy and promote sediment accumulation. This
will help saltmarsh vegetation establish naturally, creating habitat for fish
and crustaceans, capturing carbon, and improving the estuary’s resilience
to climate change and coastal squeeze.
