In South Norfolk we have several lowland
chalk streams, however, here the river
habitat has been modi昀椀ed in the past to drain
the land which has resulted in the loss of
di昀昀erent river habitats such as rines and
glides. There were only small areas of gravel
bed, the substrate being more commonly
sand or silt.
The deep channel means that in high nows
the river does not spill out on to the
noodplain, and silt se琀琀les out in the channel.
As the noodplain is drained it is dry and
doesn9t support the noral diversity you would
expect.

This project created a channel that allows
noodwater to frequently spill out onto the
noodplain along with a series of scrapes.
Crea琀椀ng a more dynamic mosaic of wetland
habitats within the noodplain, bene昀椀琀ng
wildlife, water quality and people.
