Preven}ng ca琀琀le poaching and
restoring the channel to its natural
width will increase nows and
naturally clean the gravels of
sediment, this will o昀昀er signi昀椀cant
bene昀椀ts to invertebrates, 昀椀sh and
water quality, all of which have
been shown to be deteriora}ng
under WFD in this area of the River
Colne.
It will also improve water quality
for public water supply and reduce
nutrient and bacterial loading
going out into the estuary, which
will in turn reduce opportunis}c
macroalgae growth on the
inter}dal areas of the Colne
estuary and improve water quality
for the shell 昀椀sheries located with
the Colne estuary.
This project will also reinforce
successful partnership working
between the Environment Agency,
Colchester City Council, Anglian
Water, Essex Wildlife Trust and the
local grazier.
