2023-24 Tales from an East Anglian Riverbank - Portfolio - Page 10
Riverlands is a project led
by the Na}onal Trust across
5 catchments in England
and Wales. The programme
has 3 main aims: (1) Rivers
and catchments that are
healthy, clean and rich in
wildlife. (2) Rivers and
catchments that are easily
accessed, valued and loved
for their heritage and
beauty, and (3) Sustainable
long-term care for river
catchments that has a
na}onal impact.
Only 17% of England’s
rivers are in good health, as
intensive agriculture,
development pressures and
the e昀昀ects of climate
change take their toll, and
13% of freshwater and
wetland species are now
threatened with ex}nc}on
from Britain. As proven
elsewhere, solving this
problem requires a
catchment-scale approach
with people and
organisa}ons working in
partnership.
This project is working
across the Upper Bure
Catchment restoring
habitats to bene昀椀t rare
species, working with
farmers on improving land
management and
controlling invasive species.
